In late 1914, a ‘first class’ internment camp was established on Motuihe Island, in Auckland’s Hauraki Gulf. This e-book examines the existence and operation of the internment camp in the context of New Zealand’s wider engagement with the Great War, and considers the ways in which the treatment of ‘alien enemies’ was a contested issue that shaped attitudes and behaviour during a critical period in our history.
